Re: Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront - Mill Ruins Park - Waterworks
Oh wow, that's great. Love the pavilion idea. I have always been intrigued by the arches of those old mills peaking up at the end of the parking lot.
I hope someday we can excavate the ruins east of Washburn A (the hill across the parkway), assuming there are still ruins there. I've been reading Minneapolis and the Age of Railways and it's provided me a whole new perspective of the mill district. I'd always considered Washburn A as being "on the river" but it really wasn't. There was a lot between the two. It makes the whole canal and railroad trestle much more of an amazing project to me.

I still wonder about having kayakers that close to the falls. How long until someone gets swept away? I'm guessing within the first week.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I'd suggest talking to someone working on this project about all the ways that's going to be prevented.

Is there going to be some kind of eatery included (like Tin Fish, Sea Salt, etc.)? Something like that would do really well in this area right now.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront - Mill Ruins Park - Waterworks
A café is proposed for the preserved mill buildings, food & drink menu tbd.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront - Mill Ruins Park - Waterworks
You all do realize that this is the same route that kayakers have taken into the lock for years right? Has a kayaker ever gone over the falls to date? There has been kayak tours and access in these areas for years. They'll have to portage now but there are massive barriers and such around the falls.I still wonder about having kayakers that close to the falls. How long until someone gets swept away? I'm guessing within the first week.

Maybe the Segway tours will go over the falls...
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront - Mill Ruins Park - Waterworks
Is there a reason why we can't just close that small stretch to car traffic? Seems to take up a huge part of the limited park space.

Probably because it's a part of the grand rounds scenic byway. Is there a reason why we can't just close that small stretch to car traffic? Seems to take up a huge part of the limited park space.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront - Mill Ruins Park - Waterworks
Isn't it also part of the Great River Road... which is in part federal too?

Not sure who else has seen it but here is a presentation on the plans by Friends of the Lock & Dam for St. Anthony Falls. Includes a few updated images and a goal of completing bid packages in 2021. This is all assuming the Army Corps of Engineers decides to dispose of the facility.

If this becomes reality I'm going to be having my wedding reception there. Count on it. That's an insanely cool space.

This looks great. I also noticed that they mention possible repurposing of the Post Office. I've wondered about this given that it's one of the larger properties on the river.

My dream for the post office building is that it be bought by a major institutional use, and they hire an architect with the inspiration of HdM's Elbphilharmonie, and Zaha Hadid's (lesser but in the same vein Antwerp Port House. The Minneapolis post office's size and location would make it well suited for such a historic re-use + contemporary architecture project. Imagine the University of Minnesota building a new design school with this vision, for instance.
Anyway, that's the dream.

The post office would make a very nice indoor market along the lines of Cleveland's West Side Market.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront - Mill Ruins Park - Waterworks
I've had that thought to, although I do worry that it's actually a bit away from the core of downtown such that it would have trouble attracting the workday shoppers it would need to survive.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront - Mill Ruins Park - Waterworks
The Nicollet-Central streetcar could help with that.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront - Mill Ruins Park - Waterworks
The post office is a truly massive building -- even if you put a very big market in there, you'd still need to fill an awful lot of space. And because it's so wide, most of that space doesn't have any access to windows.
Re: Downtown Minneapolis Riverfront - Mill Ruins Park - Waterworks
You could potentially connect the Post Office to the skyway. I'm curious what they presently do with all that space? Floor hockey with small parcels?
