See, they are keeping the two best buildings.

Those transom windows would have made great salvage.

Correct, they reviewed it and rejected it.
Which is more a reflection of the toothlessness of our historic protection laws. They seem to be focused on noteworthy events or connections to important figures and miss the fact that there are so few old commercial buildings left downtown that they should probably be protected in general.
Eh, I wouldn't support a rule to preserve something just because its old, then we will always be stuck with some sort of junk.

I was thinking the same thing...

Encouraging tidbit from the DMNA Development Tracker attached to their meeting agenda:

"The property sold, but the project remains unchanged with the exception that there is no longer a connection to the historically designated Handicraft Guild building and the exterior material is now metal; not EFIS."

Groundbreaking on March 21.

Which is super confusing to me. Don't CPC approvals expire after two years? Did this get reapproved at some point after Fall 2015?

I’m not 100% clear on this either. I wonder if maybe Minneapolis’ ordinance allows the CPED director to issue extensions without City Council action.

In the suburb I work for, approvals are good for one year, Council can extend by another year (or if we know the project has a longer timetable for beginning construction, we’ll write in 2 years from the initial approval so it doesn’t have to go back to Council)

According to the article, the building will feature a 'Minnesota cabin-inspired' club room and views to the Mississippi. They are also targeting recent college grads making between $45-65k so the unit mix is heavy on studios.

The developer behind City Club is Jonathan Holtzman who apparently also did the Mill City District Apartments and the Soo Line conversion, which I didn't know.

And an unlocked F-C article. Interestingly, the Bizjournal says completion in Spring 2019, while F-C says Fall 2019. My guess is July.

Views to the Mississippi? That's quite a stretch--even for the view down Marquette--since the Post Office is in the way.

Ran across an old business card from when I stopped by Floyd Thompson's drum studio in this building... Back when I made a call to his store, he had two rooms across a hallway with one set up as a studio and one as more of a museum. Anyone know if he ever found a home elsewhere?

Given that this building has mixed incomes and more units per square foot can we also assume it will have more tenants per square foot? I say this because yesterday I was at the library imagining a bunch of people living and coming in and out of the Nicollet 365 project. But, then I remembered that you hardly ever notice the tenants of these luxury projects.

Kinda nuts that they're using "CBD" as their location instead of "Downtown". Looks like they already have a City Club Apartments Mill District, which is also in downtown, but I really don't know that that would confuse anyone.

Maybe capitalizing on the CBD oil trend...
