I live a block and a half away so I ran down there quick and took a short video of the mess.

I live in stevens square and my water pressure went down for a while. The pressure is back to normal now but it's coming out all yellow and there are actually what looks like bits of dirt coming out. ew...

So I wonder if the underground parking filled up with water? That sounds like a mess. I went down there to take some pictures, and obviously my phone died before I could get any good ones. It was torrenting pretty well down Hennepin toward the river, and it looked like they were trying to keep it moving around where it was puddling, presumably so it wouldn't freeze. What a mess though. I hope Ryan has serious insurance.

I heard there might have been people trapped in the underground ramp of the post office floating around in their cars, so i wouldn't doubt that the basement of 222 filled up. yikes!

I'm not sure insurance covers gross negligence.....they cracked the pipe themselves....

14 MGals of water costs about $126 (assuming $9 an MGal).....which seems too small, so maybe it was 14 million MGals spilled, which would cost $126 million!!

*Edit: Woops! An MGal is 1000 gallons, not a million! So it's directly between the two figures, at $126K in cost for the spill just for the water lost.

I'm curious as to how much of a setback this will be for the construction of 222.

I don't think there's been a lick of construction since the water main break, which is two days lost at this point. In the grand scheme of things, not tragic IMO. I'm wondering what the financial ripple effects of this will be. Yikes!

Luckily there weren't any people trapped down there, but yeah dozens of cars (perhaps hundreds counting postal trucks) were lost to flood damnage. I forget what the exact number was they threw out, but it was millions of $ (using 25k/car).

That's a great pic, not only to show the water, but to show how much this fill in, and completes the street. So cool to look through and see the ING building and such beyond.

Yea this really does knock out a huge surface lot. It's a little shorter than I had thought it'd be, but I'm excited to see it once the tower is done. I just hope that with such a large footprint the exterior can do enough to differentiate itself and add a little diversity to the block.

The two towers anchoring the project on the Hennepin Ave side will give it more stature and height. For me ,the building feels more like it fits the character of North Loop area, and really isn't part of the downtown core. That's just fine as it gives the North Loop neighborhood a nicely defined edge and entrance from downtown. But I think enough is enough with these 6-7 story apartment buildings going up in Mpls. We have a supply of expensive apartments to last our city for at least a few lifetimes.

It kind of is more a part of the North Loop than the CBD though. It's where North Loop and the Mills District come together.

Splitting hairs here, but I wouldn't say the Mill District starts until you get to 3rd Ave. S.

More precisely, I'd say it's where the North Loop and Gateway District come together.

I think of the North Loop as the area north of the cut, and the Warehouse District being the area between the cut and Hennepin. So if you asked me, I'd say that 222 straddles the Warehouse District and the Gateway, although I suspect it will end up fitting in better with the latter than the former.
