I feel like you just described every Trader Joe's I have ever visited.Lots of open space that seemed wasted, and it seemed like, at least for the products I was searching for, their produce was a lacking.

In this case, I was referring specifically compared to other TJ's.
Re: East End / Thresher Square / Trader Joes - 713 Washington Ave S
It's been awhile since I've been in a TJ's, in part because I'm not going drive past another option to get to one, and in part because when I used to shop there from time to time, I found them short on fresh meat and produce. Having gone in expecting that, I was pleasantly surprised.
Planning to stop in to pick something up for dinner on the way home.

I agree, lots of strange open space. Felt like they could lengthen all of the isles into the register area, or perhaps some more displays are slated for that space. Also felt they could squeeze in another isle with as much space as there were between them.
I don't think there is much room for bike racks on Washington sidewalk though, unless the bikes would be parallel to the street.

I have never really understood Trader Joe's. It doesn't have the breadth of product range I expect from a "supermarket" but can't make up for that lacking with anything significant in the deli, meat or produce categories. That said, I did buy a couple of items on their opening day. Working nearby, I can easily see stopping in... monthly?
Re: East End / Thresher Square / Trader Joes - 713 Washington Ave S
You can certainly do pretty much all your grocery shopping at TJ's depending on what you cook, but they really are "best" for easy-to-make frozen entrees, prepackaged stuff, and speciality/ethnic items that in some areas of the country are hard to find.

As someone that hates the process of cooking, TJs is like crack to me.

Yeah, you’re the target market, all right. As someone that hates the process of cooking, TJs is like crack to me.
For someone like me, who’d rather cook myself (or go out), their produce and meat is very, very weak.
Surprising, considering some things—like their French Vanilla ice cream or canned tomatoes imported from Naples or the best ricotta in the Twin Cities or the only un-ultrapasteurized milk I can find—literally amaze me.
Luckily I live halfway between a TJ’s and a food co-op with fantastic local meats & produce.

The Starbucks at street level here on Washington Ave. that has been "coming soon" for a while now has officially begun construction/build-out.

SO many street level Starbucks in recent years. I'm not complaining! I routinely walk by a skyway Starbucks or two (e.g. the one in the Westin) to get to a street level one.

The Canopy Hotel is really starting to pickup speed. All exterior work looks to have wrapped and I'm able to see what look like "model" rooms that have been completed (for photography? I'm guessing) from our apartment at East End. Walked by the entrance on 3rd St and grabbed some photos of the main elevator banks and lobby. They're now listing the hotel on their website and have started taking reservations for April 2019, but will be interesting to see if this opens earlier (I think it was originally targeting late 2018, then Jan 2019): https://canopy3.hilton.com/en/hotels/mi ... index.html

The Hilton Canopy hotel officially opened for business today.
Its been fun watching this whole square finish its build out, and adjacent properties (Moxy Hotel, IronClad, Vicinity) near completion as well.

Strib of the opening had this blurb about Sherman’s future intents in the area:
http://www.startribune.com/new-63m-luxu ... 506385862/Now that his redevelopment of the block is complete, Sherman said he has several other projects to focus on. He said his company will announce another large addition in the area soon though he didn’t share details.
Re: East End / Thresher Square / Trader Joes - 713 Washington Ave S
Also missed that there is a second restaurant opening in the building as well, and looks like its seperate from the Hotel's restaurant (Umbra). That would explain the interior build out that is still going on at the corner of 3rd and Park.
Sherman Associates also has a lease signed for a Denver-based restaurant scheduled to open in May in a 3,000-square-foot space on the ground level of the hotel along S. 3rd Street.

And, actually just a quick dig through inpsection permits on the building looks like the tenant is going to be Bacon Social House: http://www.baconsocialhouse.com/

Linkedin confirms Bacon Social House for Thresher Square (though it says in North East Minneapolis). Hiring managers,

The Graduate Hotel on East Bank has a restaurant called Beacon Public House. This will be a great confuser. Can't wait.

My buddy lives a couple blocks away from the Denver version. "Good beer selection and food is decent, don't go if you have to be somewhere." Let me know if you want any more riveting restaurant reviews.
