Re: City Club Apartments - 1000 Marquette Ave (Handicraft Building)
I don't disagree with there being an untapped need for a better way for people to match up with roommates, but I think prescribing it is the same sort of middle-class sensibility as a default that cost us a lot of our more affordable living options in US cities.
I don't really get why the idea of sharing communal spaces among many people in a building is somehow more abhorrent than having one or two people share your actual living quarters. I don't know, if I given the choice to have roommates in my apartment or to have a tiny private apartment that had a shared kitchen on the floor, I'd pick the latter. But we don't give people that choice anymore.
At the moment I'm not facing this problem, but I definitely never want to deal with roommates ever again. And it would be a detriment to my mental health to be economically forced into that situation because nobody built options for people who want to live alone and are willing to make space trade-offs in order to do so.
Let's see how these not-that-affordable units do before we start tearing them down.

don't hurt me but.. I actually like it! Maybe minus the oversize marshmallows on toothpicks ceiling fixtures. I like how it is very "busy" it be a great waiting spot in the lobby for when your meeting people but your just need an extra 10 min. to get ready. The only thing I don't like is the price. the 1400 studio look really nice. I'd be ok with paying 800 maybe 900 for a studio that size. Ok maybe 1200 TOPS but that is only if there is a nice small dog walking space outside which there is not. It's really prized out of it's market. Though I'm not born with a golden spoon in my bum so I would likely never be welcome here but... it's fun to pretend at least..
There's too much happening!!!

The "restaurant space available" sign now has a giant LEASED sticker across it. Any ideas what's going in here?

Does anyone know how this is leasing up?

Man, that is one ugly box.

There are aspects I really like, but a lot that's disappointing, the pool on the roof looks awesome.

That white column is rather prominent looking north on Marquette... would be a cool living wall or area for some sort of art.

I think it turned out well, it just looks undersized for the downtown core - it's just barely taller than it is wide. Really shows the difference in office vs multifamily floor height.

This looks like poorly designed public housing out of the fifties and sixties. Actually there was a good deal of public housing in that era that was better designed than this. This is another featureless box that adds little or nothing to the streetscape or it’s limited slice of the skyline. For all of the jazz about creative interior spaces here, the exterior packaging is amazingly un-creative.

Way better than the original proposal. Something to jazz up the south side is a great idea.

Right?!Or it’s fine.
Most buildings are ordinary. That’s fine. Sure, I’m not a fan of most dark patchwork buildings, but it’s a design trend and we mostly have to live with it.
What really matters is buildings that, because of their size or location, stand out. Things like skyscrapers, “gateway” buildings that signal the entrance to an area (downtown, Uptown, etc.), buildings near major transit stations, buildings seen from a body of water, triangular buildings where streets meet at an angle, that sort of thing.
Buildings like this in the middle of a jumble of other similar-sized buildings don’t really stand out. But, still, their presence at street level, for pedestrians & cyclists & transit users, is still important.

the most concerning fact is that it looks like it's a rendering and not the actual building.

I didn't realize some of the units have all-season(?) balconies.
The problem with being an introvert online is that no one knows you're just hanging out and listening.

The Michigan-based developer of that project, Jonathan Holtzman, was in town this week to tout the project, which he said has been a hit and will serve as a model for future developments.
He said that within months of opening, more than half the units have been leased, emboldening him to pursue a second high-rise development in downtown Minneapolis, though he wasn’t ready to disclose the location.

I wish I could say that building does something for me beyond making me miss Bar X Espresso.
