Future of the forum
Re: Future of the forum
It sounds like technically there was a $40 charge for an “SSL certificate” (this sounds fake) so if three people want to Venmo me $10 that would be cool: @Nick-Magrino

Site5 -- which wouldn't be my choice, but it is a nightmare to move a big phpBB install, so delaying that.Yo you can get those for free now. What's this beast hosted on?“SSL certificate”

Looks like you can enable AutoSSL in cPanel to get free SSL certs using Let's Encrypt:Site5 -- which wouldn't be my choice, but it is a nightmare to move a big phpBB install, so delaying that.

Yes, cPanel has it and many cPanel hosts have that turned on, but Site5 deliberately does not for their shared hosting. I prefer Let's Encrypt (both because of the $0 price and the superior validation setup)Looks like you can enable AutoSSL in cPanel to get free SSL certs using Let's Encrypt:Site5 -- which wouldn't be my choice, but it is a nightmare to move a big phpBB install, so delaying that.

Re: Future of the forum
So what went on behind the scenes? The streets.mn board decided they wanted to integrate it, then abruptly changed their mind and decided they want nothing whatsoever to do with it?
Re: Future of the forum
Not really abruptly. It’s fine!
I also got donations from Grant Simons, Matt Steele, and Nathan Jorgenson.

Re: Future of the forum
Let me second that! The fairly decent hosting company I was using was bought out by Site5 (The Buy-N-Large of the hosting world), which I promptly left because of their SSL fees and their bad reputation, even though 1.5 years of service had already been paid for (non-refundable). I found a great new hosting service for my business, monstermegs.com, based in Wisconsin. They offer free "Let's Encrypt" certificates, the only catch being that you have get a unique IP address, not a shared IP address (of course), which is a small added expense. But I have been very satisfied with my service.Looks like you can enable AutoSSL in cPanel to get free SSL certs using Let's Encrypt:Site5 -- which wouldn't be my choice, but it is a nightmare to move a big phpBB install, so delaying that.

I've been all-in on Linode for years, but you don't get cpanel or anything with them it's just a bare VPS.
Re: Future of the forum
Hey gang, paid another $108 for hosting last month if anyone wants to slip me some cash on Venmo at @Nick-Magrino.
Also, does anyone want to take this over?

Re: Future of the forum
I'd be happy to. Venmo is asking me to provide the last four digits of your phone number to let the payment drop.
