I'll try if 26th is safe enough. It's not a critical link though, just an extension of the trail and a part of larger plans. 2nd St is honestly pretty well used by cyclists and runners and could be made safer.

For those without access to the Strib, it is an op-ed by MPRB Commissioner Becky Alper that is against maintaining the 18-hole configuration of Hiawatha Golf Course by way of racial equity/environmental justice, focusing on the impact on generations to come.

Interestingly, just over a week ago, MPRB Commissioner Becka Thompson penned an op-ed citing racial equity through the lens of historical preservation/appreciation as the reason to maintain an 18-hole golf course there.

During yesterday's City Council Meeting on the North Commons Park transformation, a staff member said they don't take into account community centers or something. I was like, "Huh?"

During yesterday's City Council Meeting on the North Commons Park transformation, a staff member said they don't take into account community centers or something. I was like, "Huh?"

Really? Did they look at the data? Probably the most glaring issue I see is not including the lakes as parkland. For example TPL has Lake Harriet listed at 119.3 acres but the park department shows it as 470.07 acres. This wouldn't be such a big deal if other cities didn't get to claim water as parks. However, New York for example claims thousands of acres of ocean as parkland. I find it baffling that Theodore Wirth park has multiple bodies of water but the only one not counted as parkland is the one inside the city limits. Having the lakes counted would have easily pushed Minneapolis into 2nd or 1st place.

I have a few other gripes but this is my biggest one and it definitely isn't community centers.

What’s the latest on the Hiawatha Golf Course change from 18 to 9 holes. Does that change take effect this summer?

I found the project website but it doesn’t say if funding is secured or a timeline has been drafted.

It's going to be primarily used by the run group at Mill City Running for their group runs from St Anthony Main and folks biking up there to the regional park from the Downtown riverfront, not from folks in the Northside. This isn't an area folks really live, there are also a series of steep hills to get into where people live. Also that area of 26th isn't a safe enough area for people to bike or run. (The line ends as you enter the most violent part of north.) Although not perfect you can see how the users in this heatmap don't make it close to 2nd via 26th despite it being a connection to 2nd and going downtown or north to the regional park. (I did an arrow to show where people will go)

Plymouth, 42nd and Victory Memorial or the E/W bike corridors in North. Plymouth is getting new bridge over 94 which should be nice.

(You can also see that there is zero activity on the Fremont and Emerson bike lanes which mirrors what I've seen both biking and running.

A nice slate of trail improvements to Nokomis-Hiawatha Regional Park area beginning construction late summer/fall '24.

If any of these had to be dropped for budget considerations, I don't think the improvements at "Area I" are that critical. A "nice to have", sure, but some of the ped-bike (and bike-bike) conflicts there could be improved with some striping alterations and signs asking people to slow down / yield. There is zero potential for conflicts with cars in this location, so to me it just doesn't rise to the level of importance of the other projects.
