Wow, they've really expanded things if every marked street has a planned traffic calming project. Glad to see that they're tackling MSA roadways too.

Continuing the discussion around the Lyndale reconstruction, it looks like they have planned treatments for each parallel street within 5 blocks of Lyndale. Could be rather transformational for the area. Hopefully that helps reduce speeding which would otherwise occur from drivers detouring around the construction area.

Saw a stolen car use a speed hump as a jump last weekend. Car went into the air, landed and hit a tree. The kids got out and ran. It wasn't a speed bump, but one of those raised roads that match the sidewalk .

well in MnDOTs never ending quest to fence off the unhoused people they have fully fenced off the sidewalks of both franklin and cedar underneath Hiawatha. And now the people have moved to the ramp of the 24th street ped bridge. So basically you cannot walk between Philips and Seward now.

Don't know if this is the best place/thread to ask but does anyone know any good books or reports on road and highway projects, construction etc. of the state from before WWII/the interstate system.
I have a school report I'm working on related to it and know a few users have written some quite good articles on streets.mn looking at some the exact history I'm trying to find, unfortunately I can't link said articles and have to find since there not "suitable sources"

Spend some time perusing Froggie's site and you'll learn a thing or two about highway planning in the Twin Cities. I'm not sure how much, if any, pre-dates the interstate / WWII era, but there's a lot of interesting stuff there.

I wrote some of the mentioned articles on streets, I didn't keep a comprehensive list of primary sources; besides the ones Froggie has listed the printed primary sources I recall using at the moment were historical maps either online or in my personal collection, some of the online Auto Trails registrations, the 2009 "Footpaths to Freeways" report at the MnDOT library, and the 1939 "Toll Roads and Free Roads" report I found digitized online.

FYI streets generally doesn't allow authors to keep their articles updated. The ones on www.northstarhighways.com are what I consider the definative versions that are kept revised and updated.

Thanks for all the links, this really helps me out because maybe it's due to frequenting more rail biased places but a surprisingly amount of them paint road/highway infrastructure as not existing before the intertstate system beyond some mud, dirt, or maybe archaic cobblestone roads and that most cars and trucks where just novelty toys for the rich until the late 50s early 60s

Back in December, Steve Riner announced on the AARoads forum that The Unofficial Minnesota Highways Page would be ending at the end of the year, said he didn't really have time to keep it updated much less modernize the look of the site that was essentially unchanged from it's origin 30 years ago.

Looks like we might get another six blocks of protected bike lanes on Washington in the Mill District. That would be an improvement!

Too bad it stops at 11th Ave. The crossing over 35W might be one of the worst bike lanes in town.

And there's probably not an ideal way to do it given the major freeway interchange and ramp traffic at 35W/Washington. Maybe a bike bridge could be built next to the flyover for 35W to 3rd St, allowing easy biking from Hiawatha LRT bike trail behind Sherwin Williams across 35W to the 3rd St culdesac to Seven Corners.

Given the nearby Hiawatha and Bluff St Tunnel, it's hard to justify a bridge. Maybe wayfinding signage for bikes at Washington/11th directing them to the other trails would be good.

The Washington Ave bridge over 35W bridge dates back to 1967 and is in middling condition according to its inspection reports, so it should be due for replacement soon anyway.

The application included this nugget: "The CSAH 152 (Washington Ave) Bikeway Project would connect to a future Tier 1 Regional Bicycle Barrier Crossing Improvement that will cross I-35W on CSAH 152 (Washington Ave) about 700 feet away. Closing that gap will better connect downtown Minneapolis with the University of Minnesota without having to descend into the Mississippi River Gorge, which is challenging biking route for many people."

Interesting that both have gaps in greening on the north side of the street between 9th & 10th. I'd take a 4' sidewalk with greenspace any day.

It would include funding asks for all of the small bikeway gaps in Uptown, pedestrian improvements on Bloomington, funding for sections of the Southside Greenway, and reconstruction of 13th Ave NE among other projects.

Curious what they're planning for that block of Lake Street west of Hennepin Avenue. Very glad that they caught this gap, nonetheless.
