Re: Nicollet Mall
Isn't there some kind of heating/ice removal system in the new 35W bridge?
Re: Nicollet Mall
I think the new bridge has automated salt-sprayers, but no heating.
Re: Nicollet Mall
I hope this finally happens. having lived in Italy for most of my life, I miss pedestrian streets or even pedestrian zones in cities. The grid system in Minneapolis isn't ideal, but it can be done.

I believe it's actually a potassium based product.I think the new bridge has automated salt-sprayers, but no heating.
Re: Nicollet Mall
The old bridge used potassium acetate, and I think the new one uses the same stuff. It's classified as a salt, but isn't what you'd reach for at the dinner table. It's considered less corrosive and more compatible with soil than NaCl.

Looks like the MinnPost picked up on the heated sidewalks idea:
http://www.minnpost.com/cityscape/2012/ ... nd-st-paul
Unfortunately the author didn't make two important points (that remove the idea from fantasy-land and make it eminently plausible): First, heating sidewalks isn't really that expensive - lord knows how many utilities are already buried under Nicollet Mall; Second: the corrosion problems have been fixed (1985 was almost 30 years ago ... see fotoapparatic's salient Oct. 10 comment re technological progress).

I was hoping something like this could be feasible and economic!Looks like the MinnPost picked up on the heated sidewalks idea:

Re: Nicollet Mall
Again...can I point out that Nicollet Mall used to have heated sidewalks! People act like this is a new idea.

Re: Nicollet Mall
Nicollet Mall is going to get a LRT tunnel underneath it, right?
Re: Nicollet Mall
When I read that MinnPost story the other day I couldn't help but think the writer took that Helsinki example directly from this message board.
Re: Nicollet Mall
It is "drive down Nicollet Mall" night (from 6-10pm).

Re: Nicollet Mall
The picture is reminiscent of the last round of drawings. Remember they proposed those glass stairwells back then?

"Transforming Nicollet was one of 10 goals the Downtown Council identified in their 2025 plan, which was released last year. Their vision of the redo is pictured above."
Re: Nicollet Mall
Why does the concept drawing show cars on Nicollet Mall?

Re: Nicollet Mall
I personally find Nicollet Mall one of the best places to walk in the city. I don't quite understand the urgency to rebuild it when that money could be put to creating new wonderful pedestrian environments, like an E-W spine, or extending the mall further south. Are the tiles really that bad?
Re: Nicollet Mall
I think that view is actually looking down 9th Street. Why does the concept drawing show cars on Nicollet Mall?
Yes, they really are. The city spends an awful lot of money trying to keep them in a walkable condition. Are the tiles really that bad?

Re: Nicollet Mall
The city needs a signature and iconic street and Nicollet is just not up to snuff. I think $20 million is a relatively small investment in what could be Minneapolis' answer to the Miracle MileI personally find Nicollet Mall one of the best places to walk in the city. Re: Nicollet Mall
That picture can't be winning over any neutrals. What an awkward drawing. What is that smug businessman doing just standing there on the stairs? It looks like he is being lifted up into a UFO.

Re: Nicollet Mall
It's a space elevator, not a staircase. Perhaps a vacuum elevator, which are a bit like those tubes at the drive thru bank.
