GeoGuessr

Postby fehler » May 17th, 2013, 8:25 am

Fun game, and I got pretty close in Canada and Australia, but completely miffed thinking Eastern Europe was South America.

My best was 11,373. Sometimes it was super easy and sometimes I'd be so far off I facepalmed a little. They should add in another feature to give a % of points based on how much time you spend looking at it, to prevent looking up words from billboards, etc.

Got completely sucked in for an hour or two one evening last week. Best score was 14141. It's a blast.

Got my wife hooked on it as well. I go for speed, like panning around and looking at just the surroundings without moving on the streets. She spends some time. I got my best score up to just over 16k. I need to quit cold turkey.

If I had any flash skills whatsoever I'd develop a knockoff with some user-defined score settings, like enabling a time factor on your score or having a click penalty. This probably couldn't be elegantly programmed, but I also think it would be cool to have a bonus for calling the country, so you wouldn't be fucked so hard for guessing someplace in the Yukon that's still 1000 km from the actual point.

Personally though, I like to spend a lot of time on each round, because it's fun to explore and so I can be as precise as possible. That's how I've gotten scores above 20k several times I guess *cough, cough*.

This is very cool. But what's with its love of rural Australia?

Not enough (any?) Asian street-view. But I'm getting much better at identifying Australian street signs. Had a friend post a 22000+ score, with three guesses within a mile or so. Pretty sure he cheated.

And during one round, I had to Google "The Big Winch", not to cheat, but just to ponder "why?"

Oh, you really shouldn't have shared this game...

Here is my high score so far, without cheating:

I was able to pretty quickly identify a location in Whitehorse, YK down to 10 meters! :)

There does seem to be a lot from Alaska, Western Canada, Australia, Western Russia, etc...

Wow that's addictive. I took a lot of time on my fourth game, no cheating, 30,708. This time I was able to quickly identify the country in all five cases (Belgium, Chile, Canada, Hong Kong, Russia) and it was just a matter of identifying enough details on street signs to pinpoint the location. Belgium and Canada were pretty easy, Chile wasn't too bad, Hong Kong was surprisingly not bad (had to be in China because of the Chinese, had to be an English area because the signs were bilingual, had to be British because they were on the wrong side of the road), but Ekaterinburg in Russia was a bear. Anyway, crazy addictive!

Just since it wasn't obvious to me, an individual game involves a series of guesses. I had tried a single guess which was within a block and was confused when it only came out to 6,000 points or so.

Anyway, there was an xkcd comic about Geoguessr today:

The worst is when you get plopped down in the middle of nowhere with no signs and low-res imagery. But then again, the low-res stuff tends to be in the US, since that is where google started building their streetview database.
