State Capitol renovation

Postby exiled_antipodean » August 26th, 2013, 3:58 pm

Parts of the State Capitol lawn are becoming parking lots, so no-one has to walk too far ...

Shall we start taking bets on whether these lots will indeed be "temporary"?

So we can't run an LRT in front of the capitol where streetcars used to go but we're fine tearing up the capitol lawn for car storage.

Did I just invent time travel and land in 1958?

Remember that there are some powerful Senators and Reps that live in WAY Outstate Minnesota.

Sorry, WAY Greater Minnesota is what I meant to say.

Who can we complain to about this? Literally a good portion of the capitol mall is now a f@#$in parking lot? What are we going to do next put one in directly around Split Rock Lighthouse? In the sculpture garden at the Walker so you can park directly next to Spoonbridge?

It's ugly but it's temporary.

North of MLK Jr. Blvd:

South of MLK Jr. Blvd (or is that something that isn't a parking lot?):

I've also seen some obelisk-type things being added in the medians of John Ireland Boulevard and Cedar Street at their intersections with MLK Jr. Blvd., but didn't take any photos.

There's an opening for the Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board. One of you east siders should step up and give a voice for stronger development of the capitol complex.
CAPITOL AREA ARCHITECTURAL AND PLANNING BOARD
204 ADMINISTRATION, 50 SHERBURNE AVE.,
ST. PAUL, MN 55155
651-757-1500
M.S. 15B
Appointing: Governor
Compensation: $55 per diem
Vacancies: One (1) - Member

The board is responsible for architecture, urban design, and comprehensive land-use planning in the capitol area of St. Paul, exercises zoning and design review authority, and overseas redevelopment of the north capitol area. The board consists of twelve members.

The governor appoints four members, the Mayor of St. Paul appoints three members with confirmation by the city council; the
legislature appoints two senators and two representatives; and the lieutenant governor is the chair. The full board meets about four times a year, committees may meet more often. Meetings are held in the Capitol Building.

Speaking more broadly of the capitol grounds, there have been problems with the 60-year-old Centennial Parking Ramp that sits just east of the Department of Administration building (and has "Central Park" on top of it). Some repair work has been done, but about 280 parking spaces out of the 1,489-stall structure remain closed as they try to shore things up. I'm a little confused on the exact amount of money they're looking for -- looks like the total repair cost will be $10.9 million, but the Department of Administration is seeking $7.5 million to replenish their funds (they've already spent $2.2 million fixing it)

A video from Almanac on the extra work being done on the steps up to the capitol entrances. Looks like a big mess.
