I had some friends who lived there in the 5-10 years ago range. It was fairly dumpy - not in good shape but I've seen far worse, too. There two things of note about the house: one, you could easily climb onto the liquor store roof from the backyard, and two, a rumor that Courtney Love used to live there. Not sure if the Heritage Preservation Commission is concerned with the Grunge Era.

Why in the world would she have lived in Minneapolis? I was pretty sure she was entirely west coast.

That entire triangle block is essentially impervious, so that will make a nice addition :|

For all I know and care, she could have just puked on the porch (Uptown was so much more vibrant then).

She was in the band "Babes in Toyland" for a while in the late 80's. Back when Mpls was still huge in the music scene.

Plant a double row of trees on the sidewalk edge and no one will care. Don't, and it is a neighborhood depleting blight. The duplex is regrettable, especially its trash filled yard.

There's reasons behind reasons behind reasons for why things do or do not happen...I wouldn't worry about the City not doing its job. As for Chicago-style infill: I'm ALL for it! I'm not sure how lucrative that is for developers but I'd LOVE to see more 1-3 buildings-at-a-time infill throughout the city to bolster neighborhoods and remove blight/re-gain continuity. A great example of something that could work at this location could be the apartment/condo right across from Calhoun Square and 31st St -- it's 4 floors, it's mostly green, white and maroon, and has a arched roof. Hopefully somebody knows what I'm talking about!
this one? Image
That's it! It has a name too, but that's the kind of thing (or slightly smaller scale) that should fill in vacant parcels throughout the city.

On an obviously much smaller scale, the Minneapolis music scene was one of the models for what Seattle then came and blew out of the water during the grunge era. Though, to be sure, Nirvana was hardly from Seattle.

Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic were from Aberdeen, which is two hours away (Dave Grohl from Virginia). Kurt later moved to Seattle and that's where he died, but he hardly ever lived there in his lifetime.

Courtney Love pretty much copied Kat Bjelland and Babes in Toyland, for her band Hole, after she was kicked out of Babes in Toyland. Even Courtney's kinderwhore look was copies from Kat, who still lives in NE Mpls.

Nirvana also spent some time here. The In Utero album was recorded here.

To be sure, "here" refers to an isolated recording studio in Cannon Falls.

Now that the Cotty Lowry sign is down, a look behind the sign.

They've been cleaning the mortar haze off of the building since they re-tuck-pointed the brick! Looks all bright and shiny now!

Still wondering what is going in the hole between the 3 story Burch building and Rye. The have preserved the facade of the one story building, but did not do any tuck-pointing to it. The Rye building seems to have a temporary rubber membrane on the adjoining wall. An elevator shaft or something like it is rising on the North wall of the Burch building. I'm hoping for a walled garden.

Looks like this project has to be getting very close to the end of demolition phase. I thought by now they would be owrking on getting the interior together and getting a few windows in before the snow flies.

A lot of talk about that snow flying :). The first floor is getting stone on the bottom of the store front window openings. Was all in and getting mortared this morning.
