Apartment Building Names
Apartment Building Names
Why does every new apartment development have a name, and was is it always leading with "The"?

Re: The The
The names are stupid, but I'm not sure what you're getting at. Are these names supposed to have 'the' in front of their names?

Re: The The
If I was to build one I'd call it The End.

What's wrong with just using the street address? Heck, that's what skyscrapers do unless a tenant gets naming rights.

Re: Apartment Building Names
Apartments want to "brand" themselves so that they can charge even higher rents. Hell, even my dump of an apartment is named, "Minnehaha 94" representing, well, you can probably guess. Ironically, up the street, farther away from Cedar than I am, is an apartment named Cedars 94.

They are the urban gated communities. What's wrong with just using the street address? Heck, that's what skyscrapers do unless a tenant gets naming rights.
Re: Apartment Building Names
Since my topic name was mod-hammered I wanted to address The The is a reference to the best/hipsterest band name ever. Actual Wolf is a close second. If I were making an apartment building, that would be the name I choose. The The. In fact, as a home owner, I now deem my home "The The", sorry developers.

Re: Apartment Building Names
No worries easydp, I almost deleted my response because it came across so assholish. I'll save my indignation for things of greater consequence.
I'm just wondering if the branding of apartment buldings is a new thing. Elliot Park has turn of the century buildings such as The Rappahannock, The Balmoral, Drexel Apartment Hotel, Elliot East, etc. Did these buildings get their names much later?
In a way, I think apartment building names are useful shorthand. Saying, "I moved to the Carlyle" is going to mean something to a lot more people then, "I moved to 100 3rd Ave South." it's less cumbersome too.
I can't imagine trying to track all the new Uptown or UofM apartment developments on addresses alone. It'd be easier to confuse them for sure.

I live in a classic 3 story walkup in Stevens Square that has no name, and I'm jealous of the other similar buildings in the neighborhood that do have names.

Re: Apartment Building Names
My apartment, which is nowhere near Uptown, even too far east to be Lynlake, is called Uptown Estates
Re: Apartment Building Names
Anyone ever noticed that the one called "The Edge of Uptown" isn't really anywhere near the edge of Uptown?

Re: Apartment Building Names
Haven't pretty much all apartment buildings/complexes had names for decades now, if not longer? Yeah, they all kinda suck, but is it exactly a new thing?
