Well, I miss Marshall HS. Dearly.
Q. What, what? A. In da butt.
Re: The Marshall - (515 14th Avenue Southeast)
I walked by today and wondered this exact same thing. Looks ridiculous. Anyone have an idea?Notice the cement base for the street lights on 14th. Does anybody know why they stick so far out of the ground? The light has to rest at least two and a half feet above the surface.

Are they going to put in some big planters?

Re: The Marshall - (515 14th Avenue Southeast)
I think I do know why......when cars hit those things it's safer for it to topple over than to withstand the brunt of the impact. So I think they design those things in such a way where that will happen, and I'm guessing that's why the concrete portion sticks so high above the ground.
A guess, but an educated one.

Definitely gets a pass because it's outside the four block core of Historic Dinkytown.

Thanks for that, Nick. Made my morning.
Still can't get over how such a big project went so bad.

Cinder blocks are the next evolution in the Minneapolis architecture scene. Thrifty and post-post-modern.

Target Express opens tomorrow. (Wednesday) http://www.startribune.com/business/268208242.html
Re: The Marshall - (515 14th Avenue Southeast)
The corner with the Target Express actually looks alright from the street, although the way the sign juts out over the sidewalk is a little tacky.

I'm not a huge fan of the Target Express sign, but I do really enjoy the store.
It's a bit quiet right now, but this store really does pack a lot in that just isn't available near Dinkytown, even at CVS. The grocery section in particular is very nice and all of the items I checked had the same price as they sell for a the Quarry location. That's a huge plus. Target has been saying this isn't meant for normal shopping (rather, it's for in-between and on-the-go trips), but I really think the Quarry will see some decline in student shopping, especially from those living in Dinkytown who can get just about everything in a closer location.

Re: The Marshall - (515 14th Avenue Southeast)
The passage through the building is open. It approximately follows the route of 13th Ave. between 5th and 6th streets, and I found it disappointing. The southern section is a narrow sidewalk squeezed between the building and reserved parking spaces. Since these spaces are open to the sky, if there wasn't such a desperate need of parking, this could have been a quite attractive little oasis. The north section, before entering the building, has good landscaping, but the passageway isn't easily visible from the street and is unmarked.
That said, at least pedestrians can get through without walking all the way around the building, which saved me a couple of minutes on this occasion.

More or less this will be a neighborhood secret to those who seek it out and not something that everyone will have knowledge of.The passage through the building is open. Used the pedestrian walkway last night. People seem to know it's there.
Also, this is a disaster waiting to happen:

we should make sure Google has it as a pedestrian route
Re: The Marshall - (515 14th Avenue Southeast)
Many years ago i was drinking on a similar balcony with a friend, watching a drunk party load onto another, when their balcony let go. It was on the second floor so an ambulance wasn't called (and they were probably underage) but i can tell you they do fall with enough people on them.Used the pedestrian walkway last night. People seem to know it's there.

Re: The Marshall - (515 14th Avenue Southeast)
This is just classic. A girl complains to the newspaper about how her appliances dont work, but has yet to complain to the property manager? Over a month later? Is she waiting for mommy and daddy to come visit and take care of it for them? Just rediculous. And what person signs a lease without looking at a floor plan? Idiots.
Also, if this was a good management group, they would have cameras in the halls and catch those who are causing damage and/or litter and making them clean it up.
