Wait.....that's a good point: who's going to play here? I mean, we're refurbishing this thing for the Minnesota Orchestra, no? The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra is getting their own digs.
No, it's being refurbished for high school and college ensembles and some one-off concerts and monster truck rallies. The MN Orchestra is only expected to play 8 times a year plus hopefully a post-season concert or two if they do well. This is the "People's Symphony Hall."

It's noteworthy that a British newspaper is writing about the Minnesota Orchestra, but it's also important to remember that the Daily Torygraph isn't necessarily the bastion of objectivity.

and the lobby money was separately raised. the orchestra musician money and other cultural endeavors has a pool of fundraising separate from the building. the building addtiona planning and fundraising took years.
...and included lying to the legislature.

Not only was this project ill-timed, it was downright immoral.

"US orchestras are greedy and overpaid"

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/musi ... rpaid.html
Why does a musicians, need to be “ compensated” for doing what he/she loves?
Oh, that's rich.

These musicians have earned the equivalent of Doctorates in their field. A six-figure salary is not out of line.

Yes...supply and demand, blah blah blah. How very tiring.

Pro athletes love their sport… they should play for free… plus it would allow Viking and Twins tickets to return to a price that is not greedy...

Having a beautiful space like this and not allowing it to be used is a better idea? I'm guessing they're not renting it for roller derby so I'm not sure what the issue is. I think one of the main goals with the remodel was to be able to utilize the space for events.

I have to say, walking by this place being used for these events, it's a really great space - especially when it's cold like this. I bet you feel like you're practically outside.

To which I wholeheartedly agree. The new lobby is "nice." And a bit boring. It hardly lives up to the stellar hall.

Not great for an orchestra of such international stature. But nice.

I mostly like it and it works well with the surrounding area , especially the "City Room " connection with Nicollet Mall. But I agree its perhaps a bit plain, especially from the outside. The other problem is the poor condition of Peavey Plaza which I guess will take years if not decades to get renovated. It's an integral part of the whole feel and image of the Orchestra Hall complex. It needs big bucks to preserve it and improve its safety. I'm doubtful there will ever be money to do that. :(

Few years, I just talked to the woman who was in charge of it and the lawsuit was settled and now they're starting to do the designs again. Hopefully, she said, it will be open after nicollet mile is done

Would be nice if they can get both projects worked on at the same time so there will be only one disruption instead of two round for each project.
