Many Duluth hotels are booked well in advance for the summer (I know on certain days, such as over the marathon or other big events, it's sometimes booked a year or more ahead of time) and near vacant in the winter. It would be great if something that was more filled up year-round could be here, but this is Duluth's tourist and entertainment area. I suppose you could put some condos in and sell them to wealthy people from the Twin Cities, but even then they'd probably be summer homes and remain lights off all winter.

Some of those Canal Park hotels are pretty pricey, so I'm sure the area can absorb another one. Also, for what it's worth, Spirit Mountain is the best local ski area by far. I like winter Duluth.

After the latest plan for Pier B, I hope it fails and some developer with deeper pockets build the 9 story version which I thought was one of the nicest proposed modern buildings in Duluth. The new one looks like every other 3-4 story hotel built in Duluth over the last 20 years. I think Mr. Giuliani should finish the work at the Clyde site and have someone with a more modern plan develop Pier B.

Wow. Hope this project can get done. After staying at the Radisson there in D-Town this summer and having to have all new bedding brought in because it was filthy and the beefstick that was on the floor of our room picked up - I would welcome more options to stay when in town.

There are lots of decent hotels in Duluth...I think the Radisson is finally getting a much needed renovation too.

I'm sure the beefstick just accidentally fell off your pillow. Could happen to any one.

^^The beefstick was there on the floor when we walked into the room. It's a whole other thing if it was put on my pillow like a bedtime mint - that I could have appreciated.

Do they or do they not provide complementary beefsticks?

My particular room had a complementary beef stick, but then again, I'm a High Roller - so I can't speak for what someone else might receive in their room.

I stay at the Duluth Radisson every winter and never once have I received my complementary beefstick. Next time I'm complaining.

You need to be a VIP for that benefit.

I thought the Radison was undergoing a renovation?

They said that last summer when I was there last.

Not sure if it has started. Not sure if they'll continue with beefsticks on the floor for VIP's either.

Construction has started on Pier B. Finally! There's even a Facebook page.

Has anyone seen plans for a stronger connection between the southwest end of Downtown and this area? It seems like that's a critical connection.

There's the skywalk to DECC, and there's the Lakewalk connection on the north end of Canal Park. But the only other connections are at 5th Ave or Lake Ave, both with interchanges to I-35. I crossed at 5th Ave a few weeks ago, and *wow* it's a major letdown between the otherwise-good walking environments of Downtown and Canal Park.

They really need one or two more solid connections across I-35 as the tourism spreads south/west.

I don't know that they need more connections, but you're definitely right that the 5th Avenue West connection is really sub-par. And frankly, Lake Avenue isn't much better. Because of the topography of the hillside, there's really nothing to connect to as you move further southwest.

The city of Duluth's economic development arm has issued an RFP for Lot D, which is the site immediately adjacent to Pier B.
