Thoughts on what the remaining 5 ports might be used for in the distant future?

Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
Yeah, multiple IPTV ports for multiple STB would be an option. The other ports are not likely to get used and are there really because it makes sense for hardware manufacturers to just build hardware from a small set of standard templates. Ethernet chipsets accommodate certain port quantities so it is easier to make consistent hardware designs with the chassis, the circuit boards, firmware, etc than to have more variety to meet only the absolute bare minimum needed capacity in many configurations. ie Economies of scale. Plus future proofing in case there ends up being an additional port requirement. Same thing if you look at your average home user wifi router, how many ethernet ports are on there? Do you use all of them? Most people don't but they still have them available, just in case.Ah, ok. I'd imagine that USI will supply an IPTV service similar to CenturyLink's "Prism" sometime in the near future and that'd probably take the 3rd port. Thoughts on what the remaining 5 ports might be used for in the distant future?Only the first port of the 8-port switch is usable for Internet. If you subscribe to USI's VoIP/phone service called Ravon, that is usually then connected to port 2 of the switch. The remaining ports are not usable for Internet.

Is TD&I Cable one of the contractors doing CenturyLink's rollout? I saw some white "Proposed Route" flags in the ground in front of my building in St. Paul yesterday evening.

Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
Hey! Any good reason things cut off at Franklin? Everything north of Franklin, south of 94 is real high density and totally people who would use usi. My condo association is on Aldrich north of Franklin and we all talked about it at our last meeting.http://www.scribblemaps.com/maps/view/fiberusiAny idea where USI is installing these days? Looks like you get screwed out of TacoCat delivery as well: http://www.tacocatmn.com/#deliveryarea
Sorry for O/T, but it would make a lot more sense for them to deliver between I-94 & 38th Street than between Franklin and 40th Street. 3800 & 3900 blocks are pretty low-density, likely very low density of late night taco cravers. Though I suppose they might get too much business in Stevens/Loring Heights...

I wonder if they (TacoCat) just doesn't wanna cross Franklin? Kinda shitty for biking, especially at night. I'd like to pretend that TacoCat guided my decision on where to move to out of Seward, but really it was just a happy accident. But still dreadfully far away from USI.

I saw what nearly certainly looked like a tube for USI Fiber installed to a house on the 4500 block of 16th Ave S. But no other evidence of work on that block. #rumors

North of Franklin, into Loring Park are on the schedule for next summer.
That grey pipe you see on 16th is us, you will see them sprouting up all over there as we work to get the backbone completed.
Thanks.

If you move to downtown that could really entice some further population rise downtown. Plus speed up businesses by a long shot of where they are right now! But I can see why it may be a ways out from now. But Superbowl! What another perfect time to showcase tourist what great internet we have.

Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
Honestly, it's good, but I don't really think it's amazing. But maybe that's just me. And there's the novelty of having food show up by bike but you have to call to order and I hate calling people on the telephone and also I think their connection is routed through siberia so it's kind of a painful experience ordering.
For my money I'd rather walk down the street to Pineda and order something there (the ordering experience is even more painful, but I think the food is better).
Anyway, fast internet!
