612Brew

Postby Jfuss » June 14th, 2012, 10:47 am

From the Strib...
Northeast Minneapolis already has its own Arts District. Now it looks like the neighborhood will be getting a new moniker: the Brew District. This week, 612Brew announced it will open its years-in-the-making brewery at the corner of Central and Broadway. It joins a handful of breweries that have already staked a claim in the area, including Indeed, Dangerous Man and Northgate.

A little unfortunate this will be on two major roads + the railroad tracks. Makes it harder to make this "Brew District" an actual thing. But otherwise this is amazing. Minneapolis is completely void of places like this.

Nice job 612Brew and nice job Surly.

I'm very excited about this one, it's a unique place to have a facility like this.
When I drove past this the other day they were already doing some work. This will really change the look of the building that is there, right now it looks pretty rough.

Now that Indeed is quickly becoming a staple of my life in NE, I'm very excited about this one. I look forward to clearer renderings that give a better sense of how prominent this building will appear at the Broadway-Central intersection. As it is now, it's a pretty low-looking building from Central and easily overlooked. I think this will be a very fine project.

Agreed. I'd love to see that intersection totally rebuilt to better connect with its surroundings and [fantasy alert] have a Northstar station underneath it.

Speaking of "Fantasy Alert"......in the same series of the Biz Journal there was an article about Popeyes Chicken expanding 28 locations into MN and CA (assume CA will receive the majority of those), which for me has always been a fantasy of mine, as I LOVE Popeyes and there's only ONE in MN! I never understood why there were so few in MN (besides the obvious snarky remark someone could have made in say 1990, but not today).

Adding the greenery facing Central Ave, and building that structure on the roof of the existing building, is going to really help make this area less imposing. Hopefully there will be more redevelopment along Central Ave to make it more hospitable.

Does anyone know the plan for the former Burger King on Central and 18th? Hillcrest development purchased it and had a buyer with a plan that couldn’t be disclosed, last I heard. They’ve put a lot of work into this building, inside and out. Surely, they’ve had to disclose their plans by now to pull construction permits?

Anyways, whatever it is, it will be a big improvement from a boarded up Burger King on that prominent corner.

Last week, the Northeast Investment Cooperative signed a purchase agreement for the old furniture store at 2504/2506 Central Ave. Sounds like the idea is for Recovery Bike Shop to move into the 2504 side from their current spot in the Co-op building. The Co-op would then have room to expand.

The Strib mentioned Urban Growler Brewing Company as a possible tenant for 2506 side of the building.

However, the press release also notes the need to raise another $200K in member equity and obtain financing to make the deal work out. So, we’ll see if they can pull it off. I wish I had a grand for a co-op share, but I don’t. Now maybe if they offered free beer for life…

The NEIC press release touts the end of the yellow façade. I would love to see what’s under there.

Spyhouse Coffee is moving in next door. I'd rather it was further north than be right across the street from Diamonds Coffee Shop. Although, it's possible being across the street from each other benefits both: back in Columbus Starbucks just so happened to open up right across the street from locations of a local successful coffee shop chain. Except for one instance (where it was the Starbucks that shuttered) it seems to work.
