It is not totally unheard of for smaller/private firms to just wither away as their founders/principals die off. Or they continue as a holding company, divest remaining holdings, etc. Particularly if it's a family-run business and no one is stepping up to take the reigns. And what Peter said, the company may continue to exist but won't necessarily pull the trigger on the same type of deals that old man Jim does. Particularly given the current extreme hesitance of pretty much all other developers to build condos. Not even knowing anything about the company structure, I wouldn't be shocked to see Shamrock exit the downtown condo development market after Jim passes.

I wouldn't be surprised if much of the his success is directly related to just how grumpy of an old man he is, someone else may not be willing/able to take the same chances/opportunities that Stanton has.
We might be able to take some queues from the Pohlads to see how much they haven't changed things from their father's legacy, to see what Stanton's heirs might do with Shamrock.
