Even with conservation efforts, as much as 988 million birds die from crashing into windows each year in NA. A typical two-story office building that's not on a major migratory river route kills more birds than that...I'm in on that. Twenty bucks on three birds.

Based on what some of my more eco-nutty friends on Facebook are saying, I'll put $10 on "literally every migratory bird in Minnesota".

dozens per day is a little far out there
Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
How many birds are killed by house cats every year? I hate to tell you, but animals do die sometimes.

Evolution is a huge help to birds. I heard somewhere that birds are evolving to be able to tell if its glass or if its air. Similar to how deer have been able now to look both ways for cars. I do believe at least something should be done, like have the upper half glass to be opaque. But I think that this issue is being very blown up

Now we shouldn't conserve because "animals die sometimes?"How many birds are killed by house cats every year? I hate to tell you, but animals do die sometimes.
But, you bring up a point, domestic cats are known to kill over 3.7b annually according to an article I just found. That's more than the 988 mil estimated for buildings. Interesting comparison. [EDIT: The cats number is worldwide and the buildings number is North America. So those numbers aren't the best to use. Can't find NA housecat numbers.]
I actually think you're right on second thought - I really don't know enough myself to make a good guess. I just tried to think of how many flocks/groups/whatever come up and down the Mississippi each day.dozens per day is a little far out there
They only need to apply the subtle pattern I've mentioned to the upper portion of the glass for it to be a huge help. It can still be totally transparent, not opaque.I do believe at least something should be done, like have the upper half glass to be opaque.
I know, I know. I'm a hoot at parties.

Thank god we're all experts on the Internet, so we can just call the Audubon Society, one of the most respected environmental organizations in the country, crazy.

Okay but on another note the vikings just posted this video of the second piece of steel on the west side going up with some simcity music in the back. It looks really cool

I'm sure you have a bunch of studies and stats to back that claim up but that number doesn't even seem possible.Even with conservation efforts, as much as 988 million birds die from crashing into windows each year in NA. A typical two-story office building that's not on a major migratory river route kills more birds than that...I'm in on that. Twenty bucks on three birds.

There are a lot of birds out there, far more than we're ever aware of. There were once 4 billion passenger pigeons in North America alone; all are now extinct. That number was a small fraction of the total birds in the Americas.

From the wiki on them. Also they were hunted and used in war. The lost one died in a zoo. A zoo. In 1914, how many large glass buildings were towering in the city in 1914? Not very many, just a lot of windows in towers. The extinction of the passenger pigeon had two major causes: commercial exploitation of pigeon meat on a massive scale[28] and loss of habitat.

I'm not saying the passenger pigeon went extinct because of buildings; I'm saying there are a lot of birds out there. Passenger pigeons are just a convenient example, because there were more of them as an individual species than most and because they're evocative.
Maybe this'll be better: there are 10-20 billion birds in the United States (approximately). That means 5-10% of birds in the US die from hitting buildings every year.

Maybe we'll be the birds!
Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium
I thought this site was for discussing architecture, development, and infrastructure of the Twin Cities? Not birds.... We know many people are for and against the fritted glass, but how about this isn't brought up again until the glass is being installed!!
In other news, the second steel piece on the west end should be erected tomorrow, which is important because we will now get an actual look to how tall the stadium will be!
