Milwaukee

I thought that UrbanMSPers might find this review interesting both as a good example of brief informal review (what we purport to do all the time) and an exploration of the role and value of height in residential towers in midsize midwestern cities:

I always enjoy considering Milwaukee as a city so close and yet so far from Minneapolis in form, street life and urban culture.

Well, as far as form, street life and urban culture, I didn't consider it very long between there and Mpls. More of a nice place to visit, but as far as the tower it's OK and I don't understand the comment about it being in the middle of nowhere, since it's on the end of a dense business district just a short block west of the river where a brief walk east takes you to another dense urban district.

Milwaukee is getting a new 550-foot office tower designed by Pickard-Chilton: http://www.northwesternmutual.com/news- ... ing-Photos

This will be a great addition for Milwaukee, at a very prominent location. I like the city quite a bit, but it's collection of modern towers is overall pretty weak.

It's replacing an existing 16 story building they had lying around.

Yes, this one, I think.

It's actually a fairly handsome building, I think. Sort of a relative to our Hennepin County Government Center. But based on what things looked like when I was there over the summer, and based on the scaffolding that appears in this street view, I believe that the facade on the building is failing.

^That Zoo Interchange project makes SWLRT look like a pretty good deal for the price.

Congrats, Milwaukee and Wisconsin, on your fiscal conservatism!
