I was a big fan of II and III, and also Victoria II, so I think I'm up for it.Highly recommend EU IV, but take note that it's by far the most complicated thing that exists in the world.

Re: Video Games
Democracy 3 was a ton of fun when I first bought it. But then you kinda run into a wall with it. Maybe if the Modding community were more active. I agree with EUIV though. Definitely an awesome game with an even more awesome mod community. The new(ish) expansion for Victoria II is a lot of fun as well.Democracy 3 also on sale.
The problem I have with EUIV is by the time I get to about the mid 1500's I've noticed another country I would like to play as. I have about 7 saved games with different countries all around 1550 or so. That problem only got worse with the new colonialism DLC... Lol.

Re: Video Games
Anybody here play Ingress? It seems like the kind of thing that people that enjoy walking around and also video games would really be into.

Re: Video Games
Ingress is an awesome game. I'm just really bad at staying committed to playing it- I usually play in several week bursts and then forget about it for a month or two.
If you haven't tried it and have an Android, check it out.

You should play if you're green, or go to hell if you're blue.

Re: Video Games
Hey so Civilization Beyond Earth is pretty great, Nick may or may not have never gone to sleep and still be playing it. If only I had the same foresight that he did.

Re: Video Games
How does it compare to Civ V?
Re: Video Games
It is good. Nine hours in, I'd have to say the that the story is a lot less rich than Alpha Centauri's, but I think my opinion of SMAC might be influenced by it already having been pretty old and endearingly pixelated by the time I was playing it in 2005 or whenever. It clearly is (just?) a really extensive mod of Civ V, which is sort of weird because it IS very different but you'll notice, for example, that the things the leaders say in diplomacy are exactly the same in both games. So if you like Civ V or Civ in general, I'd say it's worth $50. I'm sure they'll flesh out more of a story in expansions, but I don't think it would be been that hard to add a bit more in the vanilla version.

One huge plus is that the tech web gets rid of the most annoying part of all previous Civ games: Building 95% of the Great Pyramids and then having someone else beat you to it. With everyone going in different directions, it's not much of an issue so far.

Re: Video Games
I'm enjoying your late night tweets about the gameplay Nick
Re: Video Games
I'm not a big computer games guy, but I was looking into buying one this afternoon and realize I'm madly behind the times.
Can somebody give me a brief rundown of streaming a game? I've tried to search around online but am not finding good answers to my two basic questions.
1. Does the game take up space on my computer?
2. Does the gameplay work well?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "streaming," can you elaborate more? I play lots of games and I don't "stream" any of them.

Re: Video Games
I think he means steaming it to Twitch or UStream
Re: Video Games
I think he's confusing Steam and Stream. He wants to know about the Steam gaming platform.
Re: Video Games
Oh, you're right, I guess I added an R in there. Steam?

Re: Video Games
Steam is great because it automatically downloads all updates and patches for you. You can also use it to save your games in the cloud. You should definitely get CiV but wait for it to go on sale. I see the complete edition for $30 or less pretty regularly
Re: Video Games
1. Yes; you still have to download the games to your computer.1. Does the game take up space on my computer?
2. Does the gameplay work well?
2. Yes. Games on Steam are the same as elsewhere.
Steam is largely just a store which allows you to purchase games and then download them onto whichever computer you like. The benefits are that you can save your game data to Steam's servers so you always have it, it has social functions like game forums and chat, and there are often really big sales with heavily discounted games. One other benefit in my opinion is that you can delete games once you've finished with them; you will still own them and can re-download them whenever and start playing again.
Anyways; I recommend trying it out.
