Southside - News & General Topics
Re: Southside - News & General Topics
Or if they really wanted to be bold they could eliminate parking on 37th, 39th and Columbus and route Chicago traffic on those streets south to 39th and back to Chicago. Tear up most of the pavement on Chicago from 37th to 38th and turn it into a park.

You mean south of the gas station? It's a church and I'm pretty sure I read the church owns the parking lot (used to have an agreement to let MetroTransit buses layover there).uptownbro wrote: October 13th, 2022, 1:20 pm The city or country should buy the gas station. They should also look into buying the retail building across the street with a parking lot. This would provide them alot more flexibility to work with given there will be many difference voices on what should be done here. Im not sure what should go there. Im not sure if they still plan on the bus route going down Chicago. They would also be able to move the garden area to a more perinate home if people wanted to keep it.
There is what looks like bus stop construction happening over on Park and Portland which had me wondering if they had already decided to reroute the D line over there to avoid the square.

The D Line stations on Park and Portland are temporary build ones just like the ones on Olson Memorial for the C Line. Metro Transit does plan on returning D Line/Route 5 operations to Chicago when able to.amiller92 wrote: October 14th, 2022, 9:37 amYou mean south of the gas station? Amazing. I'm a longtime patient at Southside community health center and love that place to pieces. Scott's donation to PPL should also close some financing gaps for projects in the works.

New plans in motion for the former Dragon City Chow Mein lot on East Lake. Plans include a pair of 3 story, 12 unit apartment buildings and a renovation of the restaurant with a patio space outside.
Developer is Left Lane Ventures who have a strong track record in small scale infill around town.

Glad to see some news on this site, after years of silence after the initial 4/5-story full block proposal. And, at least initially, also happy to see they are rehabbing the existing building as well as adding housing. Thanks for the update!

Left Lane does very cool infill - I'm very excited about the apartments they're planning to wrap around the old Erte building at 13th and University NE if they ever manage to get the financing locked down.

Strib has a series of recent articles on the ongoing disagreement over the City's plan for George Floyd Square, which has had over two years of public engagement at this point.
Here's the City's report that was released in October prior to this recent flurry of articles: https://lims.minneapolismn.gov/Download ... Report.pdf
10/29: Minneapolis unveils a new vision for George Floyd Square
11/4: Counterpoint: City’s plan for George Floyd Square lacks the spirit of the community
11/11: Here’s how the community around George Floyd Square is reacting to Minneapolis’ latest redesign plan
The plan is largely focused on what to do with traffic and buses, the right-of-way, the monuments, and the City-owned former gas station. It is obviously not intended to solve generational poverty and all of mankind's problems in one fell swoop...and that seems to be mostly what people are disagreeing about. This group of activists claiming to be "the community" (see "Counterpoint") seemingly do not want any decisions to be made at all.
Oh, and today's news: the owner of Cup Foods (now Unity Foods) is suing the City for $30 Million in damages: https://www.startribune.com/businesses- ... /601180505

The George Floy Square debate just feels like a tough spot: You want to respect the space for what it’s become, but you also need to change it. I understand why so many activists feel that the city’s plan falls short or, by any objective measure, moves too fast, but sooner or later there has to be action. There’s no lack of debate but traffic flow and supporting businesses also need attention. They're hoping they can somehow not only make some real progress, but keep the heart of the community intact.twincitizen wrote: November 14th, 2024, 2:55 pm Strib has a series of recent articles on the ongoing disagreement over the City's plan for George Floyd Square, which has had over two years of public engagement at this point.

I just hope they do something as it is a mess. That gas station is an eyesore. I am not sure if they are going to put in a roundabout or a memorial but this shouldn't drag on. Many times I cross the city and avoid the freeway and I take 38th St. It is a major artery but now I go down to 42nd and avoid this all together. It is not a good place right now.

"The Minneapolis City Council voted Thursday to nix a city plan to overhaul the area where George Floyd died 4½ years ago and instead pursue the creation of a pedestrian mall in the area around 38th Street and Chicago Avenue."
I'm of two ways about this. On one hand I would love to see a pedestrian plaza here, on the other hand I would love for the D line not to have to detour around here in perpetuity. Hopefully something good comes of this. Another frustrating lack of communication between the city and the council.

This is why I supported the transit only option, it provided traffic calming and a better pedestrian space with buses coming every 10 mins.Wezle wrote: December 5th, 2024, 1:52 pm https://www.startribune.com/minneapolis ... /601191314

Just going to copy over this question from the HERC thread about why experts on the city staff might throw their hands up and look for work elsewhere, apropos of nothing in particular.
