Too bad they're not restoring the entrance entablature. How will a metal cornice look compared to the masonry cornices on other buildings in the area?

This would make me happier if they weren't displacing all of the artists that have lived there for decades to create more luxury apartments.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
It's kind of amazing that building survived freeway construction, considering the history of wanton demolitions for freeway purposes in this region. Probably just by virtue of those distributor ramps having been constructed so late (1991) and the area had already been designated (1989). Had that ramp gone in a decade earlier, this building likely would have met its demise then.
From some of those photos, it looks like the cornice and the entry columns are about to fall down. That sucker is in rough shape. I'm glad the dumpsters will be pushed back from the corner of 3rd St & 2nd Ave. Way too visible in the present location. Ideally, they could enter into a cross access agreement with the property behind them so that trash could be picked up from the rear mini-alley back there. That or buy The Choice's building next door and use that for a lobby, trash room, etc.

"The building originally had a metal cornice on its south and east elevations and coping on its north and west elevations. Based on an historic photograph, the cornice was dark-toned but lighter than signage backgrounds."
Metal cornices are more common in the warehouse district than you might realize.

I seem to recollect that there was a major fire in the 1970's or 80's in this immediate area. Can anybody confirm this?

On the bright side, at least it'll be maintained. Look at all that damage in the report. This would make me happier if they weren't displacing all of the artists that have lived there for decades to create more luxury apartments.

OK, looks like the fire actually happened in 1955 and it took out the block across the street from this building, and almost much more.I seem to recollect that there was a major fire in the 1970's or 80's in this immediate area. Can anybody confirm this?

It's a shame we remember the criminal and not the victims, unless they are famous. That building was where Andrew Kunanan killed two people and then went on the murdering spree ending in his shooting Versace in South Beach...
Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map
That's not the building. That's the building where the New French Cafe was. Cunanan killed Jeff Trail and Dave Madson in Dave's loft a block north of here (Dave was a friend of mine). That building was where Andrew Kunanan killed two people and then went on the murdering spree ending in his shooting Versace in South Beach...

This was the link I was referencing... This one is the building that Andrew Kunanan murdered those two men. This section of the thread may be covering multiple stories at once... either way let's not talk about that horrible thing... Sorry to have brought it up.

I'm glad they are renovating the 200 N 3rd Lofts. That place has bad juju.
You worked across the street? So did I. Miller-Dunwiddie by any chance?
