As someone who looks at this parking lot outside their window I say MOAR FLOORS. Seems marginal to add a third floor with a couple more units, unless that tips you into elevator/sprinkler territory.

It's nice to see some life coming to Eat Street south of 28th, which feels like a real dead zone. It's especially rough at the Greenway entrance, where there's the encampment and garbage everywhere.

It is funny that the articles says the look of the building is meant to "avoid gentrification." Just a continuation of "gentrification is aesthetics" rather than the addition of, ya know, a trendy food hall concept with a tailored bar program.

It's great to see development in this part of Eat Street-- it does start to get a little depressing around 28th, especially with the abandoned car wash, the back of K-Mart, and more recently destruction from the riots. It's possible that they are preempting the development that will occur once Nicollet is reopened.

It's good to see investors being conscious of gentrification/other equity concerns, although I don't think Whittier is in any huge danger of gentrifying. I am skeptical that a small development like this could spur large-scale changes in the neighborhood's housing market anyway. A lot of the affordable units are owned by nonprofits who will presumably continue to hold on to them. There are already numerous higher-end restaurants/cafés (Copper Hen, Eat Street Social, Spyhouse) just blocks away as well as numerous smaller, immigrant-owned businesses that serve a broader clientele. As far as I can see, they exist in harmony, and Whittier is still quite affordable.

At a Lyndale neighborhood association meeting, the developer explained that they wanted to build a senior project that catered to folks who have dependents and/or want/prefer multi-generational living.

Was recently at an estate sale where it was obvious two teenaged-young adult grandkids were living at least part time with Grandpa and Grandma.

I'm not opposed to it. But if you've got a kid, a parent, and a grandparent living under in an apartment, is that really a senior household that should qualify for this project?

Minneapolis is planning on buying a building that used to house Leonardo's basement (which moved a while ago to over by surly) and I think build a new "safety and wellness center". It appears the idea is to centralize more city departments into one building.

Basing off the fact they are saying the property purchase is 6 million and the building is 38 million I am assuming it will be close to everything behind LeJeune Steel maybe even the bus storage lot for that price. That said I wonder what it means for the rail connection to LeJeune if that is true.

Community meeting is on Tuesday for the city to outline their plans to the neighborhood.

Reminds me of a concept I drew up years ago to extend 60th St west from Nicollet to Lyndale, then flow it directly into 121/I-35W south.
This would involve some ROW acquisition, including the south side of the Bachmann's property, the Uber property, and the backside of the cement plant, and cut through the city public works facility. For Bachmann's that ~4 acre yellow area of existing 121 could be traded/given to them as part of a taking.
But it would create even more redevelopment of the Hwy 121 ROW, and also allow for the improved development of the Windom industrial area. I'd also reconnect 59th St east to Lyndale, and consider connecting Dupont or Colfax south to 60th St.

LeJeune Steel is leaving this area. Moving their offices to North Loop and operations to an existing LeJeune facility in Barronett, WI. The property is for sale. https://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/ ... -site.html

Oh and I saw recently that the DSA types are already branding the city's plans in this area "Frey's cop city", so I would not expect MPD's proposed training center to move swiftly through City Council approval, despite the City moving forward with purchasing property, seeking state funding, etc.

Yea there apparently has been some talk about the city buying the LeJeune Steel property as well to guide some sort of development like the Kmart lot.

As for the PD building, I think it will be a really interesting process. They held a last minute neighborhood meeting (notice was received on a Friday and the meeting was the following Tuesday) about it and they hardly could speak to the plan. The leads did not even know what/how much property they were planning on buying. I am concerned that they expect to start construction on it next year. I understand the need for the space, but the appearance is they are trying to get this through as quickly as possible and not letting the community be involved.

Investment in a police facility doesn't bother me necessarily. I think I would question whether that's the best use of scarce tax dollars and if it's needed now at all, but unlike some Minneapolis residents, I'm not offended by the mere idea of police facilities.

On the other hand, I am bothered by how cozy Frey and the police union continue to be. If this is truly being rushed through with minimal process (especially in Minneapolis, where we tend to overdo process by an order of magnitude), it's yet another gross display of how Frey's administration works for the police union first and the community second.
