Rotterdam (Netherlands)

Postby xandrex » October 6th, 2014, 1:34 pm

Saw this article on CityLab and thought it was a fascinating project. A mixture of housing and a market with a very interesting design that conforms to incredibly strict Dutch building guidelines.

Interestingly, apparently this is their attempt to "go Asiatic," which is apparently a term for densifying (we usually seem to reference Europe). The city is about as dense as Minneapolis (Rotterdam, 7600/sq. mile; Minneapolis, 7200/sq. mile), but they certainly seem to have many more beautiful, dense neighborhoods than we do (and plenty of bikers out, at least wherever I plopped down for street view).

I feel like most of MVRDV's projects are done as a dare -- "Do you think they'll really let us build this thing?"

That said, this is a fun project with a sense of whimsy that is usually lacking in what we see 'round these parts.

have you been? It's crazy awesome. I think that it's so terrible that it was bombed out so bad. I like den hague a little better because it has cool modern architecture and an old city center.

Ugh. I'm in Utrecht right now. We're failing so hard in the United States makes me so mad. I'm in the EU for 6 weeks, I'm going to do my best to document shared space and transit and such.
