Heartbreaking story about Al Ditty, Mpls. sanitation worker who tipped off media about 4th Precinct protest raid:

Found it via NewsCut blog, some interesting comments about the story there:

Everybody is talking about KARE outing him as the tipper, but I'm more interested in what drove his dismissal. The City Pages article implies that "City Hall" wasn't happy with him. If that means any of our elected officials, voters deserve to know about that.

I really hope there's a way to find out more about how this went down. Wagers on Barb and/or Blong being closely involved?

I don't know enough about City Hall to know, but based on what they were saying publicly, seems possible.

If Hodges was, that would seem... explosive.

Hodges rejects Harteau's choice of Delmonico (he of Pointergate fame) to lead the 4th Precinct:

Rightly. What was Harteau thinking?

And why wasn't there pre-announcement coordination?

Yeah, I'm not sure what to think about this. Good for Hodges for standing up for something? Or bad for Hodges for not getting on the same page as your immediate subordinates before going public with something? More the latter than the former.

I'd say more the latter as well, because it's coming off like personal political payback rather than sincere concern about issues of structural racism.

Harteau must have flat-footed Hodges, right? Either by not telling her at all before the announcement, or by announcing it despite Hodges's backroom refusal. She knows that Hodges can't fire her in the middle of a campaign she's not unlikely to lose, and she must have assumed that Hodges would be forced to accept a fait accompli.

It's basically a perfect storm for Hodges. Pisses off the police (and their allies), pisses off good-government types, pisses off BLM types (because it's nowhere near enough), etc. Might have disappeared if she had just accepted it.

If that's what happened, Hodges should fire Harteu for insubordination. Not even sure that would be politically costly for the mayor.

Regardless of how it went down, I don't know if we can keep having such a disconnect between the mayor and police chief. If they can't sort it out, maybe they both need to go.

What is the issue with this specific appointee? The article I read didn't explain why she rejected him.

Delmonico's the guy who spread the racist "Pointergate" smear.

Am I missing something? I thought that Harteau also disliked Delmonico. Is it possible that this is just insider baseball, where Delmonico (because of seniority) needed to be appointed, knowing full-well that Hodges would reject him and then they'd appoint the candidate they actually wanted?
