Uh, no, actually.

Lots of folks use self-storage to avoid having to throw away everything they own when they are getting evicted or leaving town for a few months.

Sure, some are Edinans with three boats and eight couches, but I doubt that's the majority of self-storers. I'd be willing to bet the median self-storage lease is under one year.

Exactly, or if someone has to downsize.

Fence posts going in two different lots on Hiawatha Ave between 34th and 35th Ave. Construction related, or nuisance/homeless abatement? Neither lot seems active (except for the former "Big Timber" corner lot that looks to be temporary construction storage).

We seem to be slowly fencing off any space on which someone might erect a tent.

New project proposed for 3561 Minnehaha Ave. 32 units, 0 car parking spaces, 36 long-term bike parking spots. Packet.

This one will be built to passive house insulation standards, all electric utilities, rooftop solar array. Footprint Development strikes again. Thankfully unlike last time, they have the support of the neighbors.

I went from "great project" to "it would sure be nice if they could buy and include the two apartment buildings right to the south" to "oh those are condos nevermind" real quick

Repair Lair relocated to 4153 Minnehaha Ave. I'm curious as to what will go in at their old space adjacent to Sonora restaurant on E Lake St.

"Funding continues to come together for an ambitious redevelopment of the vacant “Checkerboard” grain elevator near 38th and Hiawatha into a pair of apartment buildings, one of which would provide affordable and “deeply” affordable units. The two-acre "Cheatham Apartments" project would be among the largest housing developments in neighborhood history, and the latest in a wave of apartment construction that has worked its way up the industrial Hiawatha rail corridor over the past decade.

The development is a partnership between private developer Sean Sweeney and the nonprofit affordable housing developer Trellis. As designed, the project would tear down the 21 grain silos on the site but keep the iconic “workhouse” in the center. Sweeney would build 120 market-rate apartments on the south side with retail space fronting 38th Street, and Trellis would build 98 subsidized, family-oriented apartments on the north. "

Demolition of the elevators would begin in 2026 with construction in 2027.

That's good news on a project that has been cooking since since Sweeny bought the property back in 2018. F&C reported at the time they were looking at building up to 500 units on the site. 218 is a little disappointing in light of that, but I'm sure it will still be a good project.

According to Longfellow Whatever, 3561 Minnehaha is finally out of the development hell that it was placed in due to the 2040 plan limbo. Like to see that the plan is to take the old building apart for material reuse rather than take the wrecking ball to it. Lots of aesthetic value (brass fixings, woodwork, etc.) in a building that old.

"Crews are underway deconstructing a 116-year-old triplex at 3561 Minnehaha Ave, making way for what developer Cody Fischer describes as a “carbon-smart, ultra-efficient” 32-unit apartment building with ground-level retail. The new building is anticipated to open in spring 2026... Deconstruction is scheduled to take about six weeks. Building will commence this spring once the ground is thawed, and will take about a year. Opening is tentatively planned for March 2026. "

Here's a Finance & Commerce story (dated 9/5/23) and a rendering: https://finance-commerce.com/2023/09/pa ... nneapolis/ If the project hasn't changed since then, it's supposed to be 32 apartments and 1,553 square feet of commercial space, which could be one or two businesses.

Very interesting. My mother grew up on 3636 Minnehaha before her house was torn down for urban renewal apts that were constructed around the city in the early '60's. My mother was gone and married but my grandmother become the onsite manager of the building for awhile. I still love that part of the city.

I know it's been somewhat recent, but when was the last time it was reconstructed?

Minnehaha feels like one of the last corridors to be reconstructed according to older styles, and probably won't be reconstructed again until 2060. Good evidence as to why climate and urban policy needs to be done now before bad policies are literally set in stone.

I'd saw the last one was 54th street in southwest minneapolis in 2018. so disappointing to ride that road with parking spots that are never used and a painted bike lane that disappears in the winter

Wow, looking at streetview, there's easily less than 10% parking utilization along 54th for most of the newly constructed portion.

To change the framing, we should be very glad that planners came around when they did considering the large swath of arterials that were slated for reconstruction this decade. Hennepin, Franklin, Lyndale, Central, University, 4th, Washington, Cedar, and even Lake to an extent have all had considerable sections rebuilt or are planned to be rebuilt in the coming years.

If planners hadn't come around when they did, we would be looking at another 50 years of dangerous arterials locked in.
