Playing in the Street

Postby LakeCharles » June 2nd, 2015, 9:28 am

What are laws on playing in the streets? I know in some places it is not legal to play in the street (i.e. kids playing soccer), but I would hope it is in Minneapolis. Is that the case?

From the Mpls code of ordinances:

427.180. - Games and fires in streets.
No person shall, within the limits of any street or highway of the city, play at any game of ball or fly any kite or balloon, or throw any stone or missile, or engage in any other game, amusement or exercise interfering with the free, safe and convenient use of such street or highway, by any person traveling or passing along the same; nor shall any person build or cause to be made any fire within the limits of any street or alley of the city. (Code 1960, As Amend., § 583.230)

Oh, at least in the suburbs, you do get some holier-than-thou parents who think that you just plop one of these ^ out and you're good to go! I've actually had to talk to parents before about the fact that it's illegal to leave these in the actual road right of way, at least according to that city.

It would be awesome if people were allowed to leave obstructions (other than parked cars, which are also obstructions) in the street to #slowthecars.

So if I interpret that ordinance correctly, you can play, but you gotta get out the way when someone is passing.

"Unsupervised children playing in the street" was probably my favorite note on that judgmental map of Minneapolis that was hot news a while back.
