Democrats absolutely need to win the Governorship in 2018. And now I'm officially terrified that the DFL is gonna try to run some South Minneapolis liberal and lose.

So who most seem like the best candidates now? Is Erin Murphy too "elite urban?" What about someone like Peggy Flanagan? Or is it going to have to be Bakk or someone similar? The Iron Range is going GOP. Seems like it has to be someone from the suburbs/exurbs, right?

I don't know if she'll get the nod, but Tina Smith appears to be preparing to run, given how much of a role she's playing in the Dayton administration compared to previous lieutenant governors.

Seems like the best bet that the DFL can hope for is a suburban candidate of some kind. It probably needs to be someone in the metro since that's where most of the party is these days, but an urban candidate probably spells disaster, especially if they're from Minneapolis.

Tina Smith? Shit no. Erin Murphy might be ok. Chris Coleman? Jesus christ no! Better to be a suburban legislator or Mayor. Daudt looks extremely likely to be the GOP nominee, should he run, and he clearly wants to.

Tim Walz is rumored to be interested, too.

That's what I was thinking. He beat Trump Jr. in the First District (albeit barely, and with a huge assist from Rochester and the college towns). It desperately needs to be someone from outstate.

If somehow Collin Peterson could be convinced to run, I think he'd have a decent shot of winning. He seems to hold the rather conservative 7th district year after year.

Yeah, no, I really don't see any way Peterson makes it thru the DFL endorsement. He's way too conservative.

Why would the inner urban metro turn out in strong numbers for an outstate DFLer?

Don Ness would be great if he were interested in getting back into politics.

My concern with a suburban legislator/mayor is that, to many people outstate, there's no difference between the suburbs and the core; it's all just "the cities".

Ness could be a very attractive candidate. Young, outstate but urban, very likeable. And unlike our current governor, he's actually good at politics.

I actually don't think it would be that hard to beat Daudt if he ends up being the nominee. He's boring and un-energetic and in general I don't think he has as tight of control over his outstate caucus as we're let to believe. I'd look for who would match up best against the toughest possible candidate, someone like Tom Emmer, Paulson, or heck even Stuart Mills could go for it. I like Don Ness as well, he does check a lot of boxes and appeal to a wider base. The DFL just needs to pick someone the opposite of Paul Thissen.

The election was not rigged. That's just crazy talk. It was a massacre because the perception is that the DFL only cares about urban areas. And frankly, I can see why people in rural areas might believe that.

Tom Emmer ran in 2010 and lost to Dayton. It was close, but he still lost. I don't think he'll run for governor again.

I would gladly support Don Ness. A Tom Bakk-type on the other hand...

Not at all sure about the notion that it needs to be someone from outstate. First and foremost it needs to be someone who drives large turnout in the Twin Cities. You've got to get the votes where they are first, not hope to find dribs and drabs here and there.

Who gets young people to vote? Who gets people of color out?

Anyway, I'm not sure that Walz or Tina Smith. Personally I like Ryback, but I'm not sure other do enough.

Turnout in metro dfl strongholds is important in a governors race. However, to win legislative majorities the dfl must do better out state. Nominating a big city politician doesn't hurts the dfl in rural Minnesota. Paul Marquart could be formidable if he wants the office.

Ryback would have been a great candidate in 2010 and probably could have beaten Emmer by a wider margin than Dayton did. However, I don't think he'd be as good of a candidate in 2018. Things have changed since then.

You'd think the best pick for a gubernatorial candidate would be a Range DFLer who can draw from up there, but someone who has progressive cred for those inside the beltway. I don't know many range legislators beyond Bakk, who would be awful. Could Carly Melin do well down the road?
