The Knoll - (1101 University Avenue Southeast)
Re: The Knoll - (1101 University Avenue Southeast)
Did they finally find some more money? Weird how progress on this project seemed to stand still for so long.
Re: The Knoll - (1101 University Avenue Southeast)
I would assume they were doing mainly interior work. I bet they use the same people for the exterior, and they may have been working on another project. Just my guess. But then again, what do I know.

Sucks to be Merit Drywall I guess? That's really weird.

There's a whole union situation, complete with some people who have been tending a "SHAME ON KELLY DORAN" banner outside City Hall for months.

Ran by this today, it looks surprisingly nice - much better than I expected, and a bit better than the average stick-built University-area building, IMO. I was on foot, no camera, sorry.
Re: The Knoll - (1101 University Avenue Southeast)
I agree. I didn't like this one at all early on but it actually looks pretty nice. Although my main complaint before was that this is the only nearby building with no front yard facing University.

I could take some tomorrow with my phone as I live 2 blocks away, I think its ugly, but "I report, you decide"

Here's an article about changing the minimum lot area per dwelling unit. Relevant here, because Kelly Doran said he would have liked smaller units in this project if he'd been able to.

Kelly Doran, a developer involved with many new projects near the University of Minnesota, said the MLA requirement prevented him from building about 75 smaller units — despite having the same number of bedrooms — at a project called The Knoll just west of Dinkytown.
“You’re forcing people to build bigger units,” he said. “Which isn’t necessarily what the community wants or market wants.”

People appear to be living here now.

I don't mind it. Looks like something that belongs in a college town.

This one looked better under construction. The colors that they ended up painting this are a bit garish.

They're definitely garish.......hmmm......I can't tell if I hate it or love it. I'm leaning towards "love it", but am still unsure.
Re: The Knoll - (1101 University Avenue Southeast)
I'm leaning towards 'mediocre infill'. However, I'm not using 'mediocre' derisively - it's just 'not great, not terrible', which isn't the worst thing in the world for a relatively small-scale redevelopment.

Funny what we consider to be "small" these days, huh? But it's true!
Re: The Knoll - (1101 University Avenue Southeast)
It is funny, I also liked this better without the cladding... I definitely like the colors, it just got a little... busy. hmm...
