Saint Paul - General Topics
Re: Saint Paul - General Topics
I noticed today that a Bejeweled Jewelry Store popped up in the 180 East Fifth building next to Perkelat (best coffee downtown). It's not exactly my thing and they do have limited hours (M-Th 10-2) but it's good to see some new business hitting this part of the skyway.

What is wrong with Denny's? Sure is better than a empty building. It will give the area more life.

Lots of things are better than an empty building, but a Denny's at this site is no better than any of the 1,600 other Denny's locations.

Hot Tip: Mischief Toy Store is moving from St. Anthony Park to to 818 Grand Avenue, near Cafe Latte.
Re: Saint Paul - General Topics
That's really exciting. Bad for St Anthony, I guess, but I love that place and I'll go there even more now. Though I'll have to change my family's toys-and-pulla tradition to scones and cream at Caffe Latte, I guess. Life is rough sometimes.
Re: Saint Paul - General Topics
I am disappointed to learn that this is not an adult toy store.

I'm not sure if I imagined it, because I hadn't noticed it before, but on the way home from work today I saw that a building on Como Ave in Saint Anthony Park had been torn down and there was a fence with a sign on it around the property. It was right next to that Park Service repair place. Couldn't find anything about it from Google searching or looking at the boards here.

It's for the Park 24 Apartments, designed by Collage Architects.

Per a neighborhood list serv:
HealthPartners and Luther Seminary have just announced that HealthPartners is buying the tract of land across from the Como Clinic (Eustis Street and Como Avenue) to build a new clinic. The health-care company plans to break ground in three to four years after an extensive community engagement and design phase.
This means that nonprofit developer Ecumen no longer plans to build an apartment building and memory-care facility on that piece of land. You can read more about this at www.parkbugle.org.

Drove along University Avenue and then around downtown St. Paul. Really exciting to see so much going up on the other side of the river too. Need to check out several of the new restaurants/bars in Lowertown. Anyone been to Dark Horse on 7th yet? Happy these some of those older buildings on that stretch are finally finding new uses.

Re: 1st national bank building sold
Ha! I did this today and it is exactly as described.Pro tip: Take the elevator in the "east" building to the top floor (16th). It's a vacant floor and when you step out of the elevator you'll find the hallway mostly dark (at least it was in 2014). Follow the hallway around until you reach the door at the end. This freely opens up into the highest skyway in the Twin Cities (built in the 1930's). It connects the 16th floor of the Merchant's Bank Building to the 17th floor of the 1st National Bank Building. You can get to the skyway through either building's elevators but it feels more adventurous going through the Merchant's Bank Building.
Nice views too, particularly of the MBB's cornice.
I think the door to the skyway is original.

Don't buy it. Apple came looking once before and Grand businesses told Apple to scram and they'd fight Apple all the way. Feared losing all the free parking spaces to Apple's customers. So Apple walked away.
I question the reliability of the source, probably someone trying to pump up excitement with old info.

"We don't your business, It'll attract too many customers!"
I think might actually be the GABA motto.

Maybe they could make a statement for retail in Lowertown.
Re: Saint Paul - General Topics
Wow, Grand Ave sure acts like a petulant child over their parking.

Saw "Lowertown: The Rise of a New Urban Village" on TPT this evening, well worth your time if you haven't seen it already. Here's a link to the video,

RUMOR: The 1st Bank sign might discontinue being lit. Not sure why, and I hope it isn't true. I'm mostly just curious if anyone knows more.
Re: Saint Paul - General Topics
It got knocked out of commission on a windy day a few weeks ago and has been down since. The owner of the building plans on converting the lighting to LED and want it back up and running this summer. There was a Strib article about it, a few weeks ago.
Re: Saint Paul - General Topics
Phew! Glad to hear it. Thanks, nate.
