...is it better? It looks pretty boring to me.Mortenson is building what looks like a really beautiful AC Marriott Tower in Portland... I guess they're worth better construction?

^Agreed. It looks to me like the Hampton Inn downtown Minneapolis.

I think we got the better deal in this case. Slightly.

Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site
The Portland one looks like a gussied up parking ramp.
Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site
And ours doesn't!? The Portland one looks at least reminiscent of moderne deco with a hint of bauhaus modernism.
Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site
Agree- Portland got the better design. Modern look with nice verticality and more glass. Our Mpls one looks pretty blah to me.And ours doesn't!? The Portland one looks at least reminiscent of moderne deco with a hint of bauhaus modernism.
PS- it will be interesting to compare the two designs again after they are both completed.

Do we even know the materials used for either one?
Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site
Seems like ours will probably be bare concrete, and Portland's will be primarily marble.

Definitely Minneapolis.
Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site
Minneapolis. The Portland one looks very dated to me already. It reminds me of the Riverside Plaza for some reason.
Re: AC Marriott Hotel (401 Hennepin Ave / Andrews Hotel site
Uhhhhh... not even close.
It reminds me of The St Paul City Hall or Post office, as well as North Dakota's State Capital. Plus tons of early modern buildings in the EU (looks nothing like the Hampton Inn which is has completely flat features). I mean it's not gorgeous, but ours is literally a flat box with flush windows, no 3 dimensional detail to speak of other than the Elevator Shaft thing on the front!?
The portland rendering just needs some dusk lighting and our skyline in the background and suddenly the rendering would be great. people... seriously I don't get ya.

While neither one looks memorable, I would say that the Minneapolis building has a slight edge over the Portland one. I'm not liking the colors used, or those balconies over the entrance in that one.

Arguing over which turd is prettier.

Turd? Wow.Arguing over which turd is prettier.

Would windows that are not nailed to the sheathing make that big of a difference (on this and other projects)?
It seems like a pretty common complaint so I'm trying to gauge if I'm perceiving it to be bigger than it actually is.
Architects working on multi-family and hotels generally get a few "moves" that they can make be it frequent massing changes/relief/plane changes, more expensive materials, etc. It is all a matter of horse-trading to get to the final design - more expensive material means less (or zero) massing change/relief/planar change or vice versa. As I keep saying, the developers hold the purse strings and they make huge impacts to the design.

I actually think so, yes. I despise the windows-flush-with-the-siding look and I think it makes the walls look thin and flimsy. Inset windows give a lot of heft by virtue of the additional shadows on the irregular surface. Our new garage has windows that are flush with the casing, while our house has inset Renewal by Anderson windows in the original openings. The different is night and day, and if we ever do the addition to the house that I've been planning in my head for years, I will insist on inset windows regardless of cost difference.Related question:
