Re: Prince
There are not many people that truly deserve the description "genius," but he is one of them. He was a genius at musical conception, composition and performance. There are very few people in the recorded history of music who can claim that.
As Duke Ellington liked to say, "beyond category."

I anticipate a mural downtown soon...
Re: Prince
So now that Prince is dead, who does the title of Most Famous Minnesotan pass to? Dylan? Come on, we need something to say when explaining where we're from abroad.

Terry Gilliam, we're the only state that can claim a member of Monty Python

I'd totally support that!I anticipate a mural downtown soon...
Re: Prince
Someone here had the idea of naming the new people's park after him.
Re: Prince
Should we give 1st Avenue the honorary name of Alphabet Street?
Re: Prince
So sad. I loved his music, especially Beat It and Mary Jean.
EDIT: Whoops, submitted before putting the 'kidding'. I lifted that from a comment I saw on a site. Couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry...

Re: Prince
Tabloids say he died from Flu complications exacerbated by AIDS which, in lieu of professional medical treatment, was being healed with prayer.

Re: Prince
..yeah. Apologies. Upon re-reading, I think you could make a case that I showed some sub-conscious white bias as well. So I'm that guy today. Sheesh. That was ... Bad?
Weak defense, but, I think the eye-rolling/inappropriate humorness of it carries. As in, "Chris Farley died? Dude. I loved him in Frat Animal!"

Oh, I was continuing with the streets.mn practice of puns, not attributing any value to it.

Re: Prince
Put a mural on a new development on the lot across Hennepin from the Dylan mural, with the Prince mural facing the Dylan mural. On the lot next to the Dylan mural, make a public plaza/park with references to Dylan and Price so they never get covered up.I'd totally support that!I anticipate a mural downtown soon...

Employee at the hardware store says it was 'walking pneumonia'. Guy looking at plumbing thinks he just had too much talent and his body gave up from working so hard. Going to poll my cat later for her theory.

Re: Prince
I've read potentially from pain killers, but perhaps a mix of things. We'll know more in a few weeks. I saw him at the old St. Paul Civic center on Christmas Eve 1984. I big loss for the music world and even more so to us in Minnesota. He never left us.
Re: Prince
I have to say I'm disappointed in how people celebrated his life and memory. I'm a bouncer at a downtown club and This weekend was literally the worst I've seen, including new years eve and halloween, etc. Somebody actually tried to fight past me to get into the liquor cabinet then pulled a knife on me, and then after bar close I saw someone get their skull cracked on a curb and beaten with a crutch, while their friend went and attacked a black escalade, kicking it and trying to bust the windows out. My boyfriend was at a show at the Skyway and they actually ended the show 20 minutes early because it was getting too rowdy outside and they wanted to make sure people got home safely. I went to First ave after I got off work, and while I was in line I got maced by a random person, presumably in the hopes that we would leave the line and they'd get in faster. Inside first ave was a totally different story. nothing but great vibes in there.

Re: Prince
Totally agree. First Ave flopped when it came to crowd control. They let the city basically deal with it in their own way, which wasn't very nice. I was there on Thursday night, and that was probably the most out of control night out of all of them. There was garbage everywhere, people throwing up, cops starting to try to re-open First by blaring their sirens next to the crowd and yelling and them to move (there was not a lot of room) and not a lot of celebrating the life of Prince.
