that's the one i was thinking of. Didn't know that it closed. too bad.BTW - there used to be another corner store 2nd St & 5th Ave. It's been closed about a year. I think most (myself included) don't go to these corner stores because it's easier to stop at a full grocery store on the way home from work.

Re: Western Container Building Condos
Yeah, I used to go there almost every day / night. It's too bad because the store itself is much nicer than the one a block closer to the river. The owner just had no idea how to run a business and bolted town one night. It's on the market though so hopefully someone does something good with it. Not sure if Whole Foods coming in would deter anyone from putting another market in around there or not.that's the one i was thinking of. And Darby's is absolutely awful inside. That, combined with the patio being set so far back from the foot traffic are always going to problems for that place. I prefer Cuzzy's patio for pre-Twins games myself.

That's it. Next urbanmsp happy hour is at Darby's. You heard it here first.
Though it may be hard to find, I never had a problem with the place. I actually found it quite good for large groups.

Yes it's a decent place, especially the patio in the summer.

There are a few renderings of this floating around out there, looks like a great addition.

A great project. Nice job with the upper floor addition, and the street level looks well done. Exciting to see condo projects again! There are a few renderings of this floating around out there, looks like a great addition.

Wow, this would be a great addition to NorthLoop. We need a condo project, I love all the construction but I would like to see some ownership options. I lived at The Bookman before moving "downtown" and always thought this build would be a perfect boutique hotel/inn.

Does this building fall under any historic designations? Looks like they plan on widening the windows.
Q. What, what? A. In da butt.
Re: Western Container Building Condos - (500 3rd Street Nort
It's a contributing structure to the Warehouse Historic District, which will make it tricky to change the windows. The district regs also require vehicular access to be from 5th Ave N, which is dumb and Greco got a variance for on the Holden Building project, I think.
"Who rescued whom!"
Re: Western Container Building Condos - (500 3rd Street Nort
Random note on this one...
I was watching Renovation Raiders on HGTV last night and they used the main floor of this building as "the warehouse" and staging of everything. I wonder if the fact that they are getting some use out of it has slowed down the remodel plans?

It's behind a paywall, but the article uses a picture of this building:

Edit, here is the judgement:

Edit again: Can anyone dig up the site plans from 2009?

As I recall, the old plans were problematic. Inactive ground floor uses, etc.

The law firm that won the case has posted the full text of the F&C article on their website: http://www.hjlawfirm.com/news/154-hj-wi ... reme-court
Fascinating case. It seems the original plan (offices, rather than condos?) could be back on the table. There's an interesting quote from Kelly Doran regarding the HPC and deeming an application complete (60-day "clock" on approving zoning applications does not start until application is deemed "complete" by staff, not when application is submitted)
I wonder what this means (if anything) retroactively for the 24th & Colfax apartment project. The City almost certainly exceeded the 60-day limit on zoning decisions, no? There was a pretty lengthy process of HPC denial, appeal to City Council, etc. As the article notes, if no decision is rendered within 60 days, it basically means de facto approval. As I recall, the property owner & developer were considering legal action anyways...this decision could potentially give them a boost.
Either way, the Supreme Court's decision is a very good one. The City now has to make historic preservation decisions in 60-days, just like any other zoning/planning decision. I can't really disagree with that.

Hadn't heard much on this one but just got an HPC notice that a certificate of appropriateness has been applied for. Interestingly, they call it the "Green DeLaittre Wholesale Grocery Warehouse". I like western container better.
Didn't really expect anything to keep rolling since Swervo was raided by the Feds and the biz journal reported that one of the owners was convicted of beating up his girlfriend. Nice guy.

525 3rd Street North—Commercial Building
Interesting proposal for a three story commercial building made out of recycled shipping containers.
