The City of Minneapolis Archives recently started a Flickr account. The photos are incredible. I particularly recommend the riverfront album.

Awesome. This photo is great. https://www.flickr.com/photos/mplsarchi ... 791618490/ Look at the carriage house for Florence Court & the shanties up and down the bluffs. The building at center-right is Sanford Hall at the U of M.

Re: Historic Photos
E.G. Walton (a huge real estate developer, minor local celebrity) was a bit presumptuous. Took until about 1925.

If anyone has a picture of the Lakewood Building at 50 9th St S before the renovation, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Says it's built in 1928 and renovated in mid 80s. And now it's, in my opinion, one of the ugliest buildings in our downtown.

Re: Historic Photos
It's really an auxiliary shopfront building that fronted the main theater auditorium. It was the home of WCCO Television and was expanded and modernized in the 50s. When the theater was demolished, the old Radio City entrance was incorporated into the Lakeland building while the auditorium was replaced with a parking ramp and office.
I think Lileks noticed that the facade of the theater entrance, or perhaps at least one of the grand windows remains behind the stucco on the corner of Lasalle & Ninth.

Jesus.. look at all those f*ing parking lots.. This is why I hate the nostalgia of groups like "Old Minneapolis." Just because you were young and dt in the 70s doesn't mean it was better back then. You are just nostalgic for your youth. DT is considerably better today and getting more so every month. Safer too.
Re: Historic Photos
Wow, that is some extensive surface parking.
They ruined Marquette Plaza with the renovation, though.

It looks like it was bombed out, imagine the cars as debris. Interesting to see the Nicollet Hotel. I didn't realize until recently that it was only demolished in 1990. I always thought it was knocked down in the 1960s with everything else in the Gateway.Wow, that is some extensive surface parking.

Argh, those are pre-Metrodome and pre-394! God what those two projects did to the grid. Ugh.

Re: Historic Photos
Anyone know what corner this is? Seems to have a theater behind it.
Also, are there any legitimate Coney Island joints in Minneapolis? We need more Coney Island joints.
